This track was created specifically for this compilation using an acoustic guitar, a homemade microphone, a couple effect pedals, some tape, and some rocks.
After coming across the compilation announcement online, I was doing some work outside cleaning up the garden for the approaching winter. I noticed a clinking noise and there were some squirrels and chipmunk digging around under the feeders in the granite for some nuts and seeds so I grabbed my recorder and let it run for a bit lying on the rocks under the feeder and caught a good number of birds while I was at it (blue jays, Canada geese, orange-crowned warblers, finches, chickadees, etc.)
I recorded a bit of my digging work as well as some shaking sounds, which was accomplished with some seeds and rocks and leaves in a jug.
The repetitive nature of the song came about as a result of watching these animals constantly and continuously returning to the feeder to grab food, disappearing to stash it, and returning. I spent a while digging out there so I had a lot of time to consider how my life isn’t that much different of a loop, maybe just a little longer. I’ll do the stupid shit that makes up my life and digging holes and they’ll keep going to the feeder and stashing seeds in trees and one day I won’t be digging holes anymore but they’ll still be stashing seeds.
I had been idly playing a short guitar bit that morning so I played it a bit and recorded it to tape. I debated running that through a bunch of effects but that felt like it was getting a bit too close to “synth”.
